10 Spectacularly Wrong Movie Reviews

10. Somebody Actually Liked Norbit

Norbit is not a good film. If anybody tells you otherwise, you should excommunicate them from your life. Even if they're related to you. Especially if they're related to you. Who knows what other dangerous actions they could commit to your person when suffering from such psychosis. Just when you thought Eddie Murphy had hit his career nadir (cardeer) with The Nutty Professor 2: The Klumps, but then he got even nadir...er with this 2007 excuse for a comedy. A comedy compared to other comedies in the same way that, say, a Big Mac found at the bottom of a rubbish tip is comparable to a three-course meal at the Ritz. Murphy plays a total of three characters in the film, including the shy title character, his massively overweight wife Rasputia Latimore, and his totally-not-racist Chinese foster father Mr Wong. Yep. It's that kind of film.

When it was released Norbit was rightfully pooped all over. Because that's what happens when you see something that looks like a toilet. It did somehow manage to swing an Academy Award nomination for best make-up, but really, you shouldn't be rewarded for making Eddie Murphy into a convincing fat woman, because that is not a good joke. It's not even a joke, really. The Rotten Tomatoes consensus rates the film at just 9%, based on 123 reviews - 11 of which were positive. One particularly effusive critic, Victoria Alexander, described it as "absolutely adorable...Murphy plays a big black woman who is not a victim of America's unrealistic ideal of beauty." So, er, we guess that's one positive thing about Norbit. Wonder why the review has mysteriously disappeared from her website...
