One of the most enduring myths about Stanley Kubrick is that he helped NASA fake the moon landing footage. That, however, is merely the tip of the conspiracy theory iceberg. The author and filmmaker Jay Weidner has written a series of essays and directed films about Kubrick's work. Weidner claims that Kubrick's work with NASA had introduced him to a sexually depraved, paedophilic Saturnite death cult, which had infiltrated the space agency and wider American society.

The story goes the director then dedicated his career to warning people about this cult, not with a press conference, but via the thematic concerns of his films. Lolita is a film about an older man and an underage girl that implies the existence of a paedophile network. Eyes Wide Shut is a film about the sexual mores of the New York elite, featuring a mysterious sex cult. Apparently, it was so explosive that Kubrick was murdered for making it.

The origin of this theory? The fact that Arthur C Clarke's original novel featured scenes on Saturn, but the film adaptation of 2001: A Space Odyssey moved the action to Jupiter. Weidner believes the location change was due to pressure from influential occultists. What's more likely is the official answer, that the special effects team struggled to capture Saturn's rings.
