While the likes of Disney+'s The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Obi-Wan Kenobi were all afforded the luxury of the state of the art LED Volume when it came time to add some cinematic depth to many a space-aged scene in recent times, the folks behind the first few flickers of this galaxy far, far away had to think outside the box when it pertained to adding some serious size and scale to their various inter-galactic locales.
Seen in the elegant horizon of Bespin's Cloud City and within an Imperial hanger boasting an embarrassment of Stormtrooper riches over the course of The Empire Strikes Back in particular, utterly mesmerising matte paintings were often used to fool fans into believing they were witnessing a larger than life set being captured on film.
Brilliantly lacing the feature players and moving space-craft into the scenario in post-production, the fact some of the most impressive locations ever committed to the Skywalker Saga were hand-crafted by any mortal, though admittedly freakishly talented, human still needs to be seen to be believed.
