10 Stephen King Stories That Wouldn't Work As Movies

7. A Very Tight Place

Stephen King It Chapter 2
Angry Mule Productions

This novella was included in 2008's Just After Sunset. Again, it is a fine story, but the trials and tribulations of a man trapped in a public port-a-john is a tough sell to studio executives.

That's right kids. A Very Tight Place is the story of Curtis and Tim, two neighbors who are at odds after Curtis' dog was killed by Tim's electric fence. As one might expect from such a situation, Tim forces Curtis into a port-a-john and leaves him for dead.

After spending the night trapped in the privy, Curtis takes his only way out and climbs into the toilet tank. He uses his dead dog's ID tag to unscrew the bolts and escape. Curtis then goes to Tim's house, confronts Tim while he's in his hot tub. Curtis first scares Tim by tossing an unplugged hair dryer in the water, then leveling a threat at him. A week later, Curtis kills himself by gunshot. Tim, hearing the shot and knowing what it meant, then considers getting a new dog.

Ah, to be a fly on the wall in that studio pitch meeting.
