10 Strangest Endings In Movie History

8. Identity

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUYBsSGKUf0 The set-up for Identity is a kicker; 10 people with the same birthday wind up together at a motel, and one by one, they're picked off by a crazy killer. Few people would have bet on the outcome, though, that all of these people are simply inside the mind of a serial killer with dissociative personality disorder, and don't actually exist. One of the 10 personalities is what drove the man, Malcolm Rivers, to kill, and the events unfolding on-screen at the motel are simply his mind's way of dealing with the fact that psychiatric treatment is attempting to eliminate the 9 excess personalities and leave one remaining. In the end, Malcolm dupes his doctor (Alfred Molina) into believing that the hostile personality has been eliminated, and that the one remaining one is peaceful, but this is a trick; after being released to a mental institution, Malcolm reveals that his murderous personality is in fact the one that remains, strangling his doctor on the way there as the film ends. Getting to grips with the intricacies of the narrative does prove a little headache-inducing at times, but it's one of those inspired slices of madness that's really quite unlike anything else I've ever seen. It's not perfect, but the idea really works and the execution is solid, making for a veritable WTF cinema moment.
