7. Donnie Darko
I love Donnie Darko. But a synonym for it would be, "Makes no sense without the director commentary...Darko." It took a few viewing of DD before it clicked and I realized that Donnie had to pull a Jesus, or a Neo, and what he was doing was sacrificing himself to save his family and the lives of many, many others. It's actually very moving and sweet...when you understand what's happening. But to most people, this movie is about a weird kid who talks to a scary guy in a dirty rabbit costume who had a bad dream and dies in his sleep. The film discusses time travel and various theories throughout, but I don't think most movie goers would piece it all together that time travel ACTUALLY plays a part in the resolution of the story. Watching the film with the commentary on, Richard Kelly gives you so much information that I would have otherwise not known. Like Donnie traveling through a vortex, which opened up in those clouds, in order to go back in time to save the people he cares about and prevent all of the chaos that's happened because of his existence. Strange doesn't describe it. Well, it does but...it doesn't. No. Yes. I don't know!
