9. A Crew Member Wipes The Lens - The Abyss
Even a filmmaker as famously exacting as James Cameron can't help but let a bizarre mistake or two slip through the cracks, as evidenced by this deeply weird gaffe in his aquatic masterpiece The Abyss.
During an intense sequence where Bud (Ed Harris) tries to convince Lindsey (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) to put on a diving suit, for about a second it's possible to spot a crew member casually wiping the camera lens - or to be precise, the underwater housing covering the camera lens.
This is one of the things that's tough to spot without knowing about it beforehand, because it happens during one of the most intense scenes in the movie and can easily be dismissed by our brains as a piece of hanging debris. But the moment went viral earlier this year, with many expressing surprise that such a glaring mistake made it onto the screen without Cameron or his editor noticing.
The film's cinematographer, Mikael Salomon, did comment on the mistake at a recent screening of The Abyss, similarly expressing his surprise that this take was used in the final cut.
