10 Strangest Movie Changes Made After Filming

8. Changing The Skrulls To The D'Bari - Dark Phoenix

Saw 3D The Final Chapter

To call post-production on Dark Phoenix a nightmare is to make quite the understatement. Disastrous test screenings resulted in the entire third act being reshot, and another big problem? Its unintended similarities to another superhero film in post-production at the same time, Captain Marvel.

Dark Phoenix's shapeshifting alien antagonists were originally written and filmed to be the Skrulls, but once the filmmakers became aware that Captain Marvel was also using them, they felt compelled to pivot.

Seemingly aware that the Marvel Cinematic Universe had all the audience momentum that Fox's waning X-Men brand didn't, if they stayed the course they risked being accused of "ripping off" the MCU by featuring the very same characters - no matter that the rights for the Skrulls were shared between Fox and Marvel Studios.

And so, through a combination of reshoots, re-dubbing, and re-subtitled alien dialogue, the Skrulls were changed to a decidedly more niche alien race from Marvel lore, the D'Bari.

The change was anything but seamless, though, with the D'Bari's choppy treatment throughout the film suggesting that writer-director Simon Kinberg struggled to make the editorial pieces fit.
