10 Studio Ghibli Films Everyone Should See

7. Kiki's Delivery Service (1989)

Miyazaki may be more well known for his fantasy epics, but one of the best animations he directed for Studio Ghibli is Kiki's Delivery Service, the story of a 13 year old witch who leaves home to live in a big city on her own for the first time. Based on a children's novel by Eiko Kadono, Kiki's narrative is charming in its simplicity and has struck a chord with audiences across all ages. The only people who do seem to have a problem with this sweet-natured story is some Christian groups who boycotted it purely on the basis that it includes witchcraft. Yeah, that's what the world needs protection from; 13 year old animated teenagers who thrive on performing good deeds.

Why You Should Watch It: Kiki is a realistic, down to earth role-model for young girls everywhere and her strength of character makes her a commendable alternative to the typical Disney princess who can't even leave their palace without a big strong man by their side, let alone venture out to a brand new town independently at the age of 13.

Also, her cat Jiji is the coolest cat you will ever see in a film, animated or not.
