10 Stupid Movie Controversies That Totally Missed The Point

2. Natural Born Killers Glorifies Murder

Oliver Stone's Natural Born Killers is one of the most controversial films of all time, depicting the nation-wide killing spree of two psychopaths. It wasn't long before accusations began to pop up that the film had inspired a number of copycat killings, and it was wildly condemned for its disturbing, violent content. However, as with so many violent films, the mass media completely misses the point in the quest to create a panic and sell more newspapers. As Oliver Stone has said himself, Natural Born Killers is a satire of the way that the media depicts charismatic serial killers, glorifying their behaviour and in some instances depicting them as rock stars. If some viewers didn't pick up on this, then they clearly weren't paying much attention, as Stone is hardly subtle about it. The irony is that in missing this subtext, they then sensationalised the violence of the film itself and gave it more publicity as a result.
