Just as Tim Burton threw in the glasses gag in Batman '89 to pay homage to the 1966 Batman TV show, Christopher Nolan turned back to the Adam West show for inspiration for his own Joker.
When Heath Ledger's new villain makes his grand entrance during the bank job, he's wearing a mask that became immediately recognisable. And it's also a living homage to the 1966 show and Cesar Romero's first appearance as the Joker.
