10 Subtle MCU Gags Everybody Missed At First
1. Nathan Fillion Plays Tony Stark (Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2)
We're going to cheat rather significantly for this one, because the gag in question was actually cut from the film. But gosh darn it, it's just too good not to mention.
Fan-favourite actor Nathan Fillion has appeared in every single movie directed by James Gunn, from Slither, to Super, to Guardians of the Galaxy. Sticking to that trend, he was also slated to appear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but when Gunn decided that Fillion's scene slowed the movie down, it was axed from the final cut.
Fillion's role wasn't going to be huge, but it was going to be a rather hilarious sight gag. The axed scene was set on Earth, with Fillion playing an actor called Simon Williams, who would've appeared on various movie posters hanging outside a theatre.
What makes this extra special is that these posters were all references to actual real-world movies, with designs based on Inception, Definitely Maybe, and best of all, Steve Jobs, with the MCU version instead focusing on Tony Stark, with Williams in the title role.
While this gag isn't visible in the film, Gunn has mentioned that he considers it MCU canon, so Williams - who, in the comics, also has a super-powered alias called Wonder Man - might not have finished his MCU journey quite yet.
