10 Subtle Movie Jokes That Probably Went Straight Over Your Head

5. Bon Appétit - Silence Of The Lambs

Orion Pictures

Silence of the Lambs tells the heartwarming story of a brilliant cannibal doctor, and the woman who uses him to solve the case of a serial killer. Dr. Hannibal Lecter is our cannibal, of course, played by Anthony Hopkins in one of his most memorable roles - he even won an Oscar for it, don't you know? And although Silence of the Lambs isn't a movie renowned for having lots of subtle jokes, there is at least one, and it's a real doozy. Blink and you'll miss it.

Cast your mind back to the scene where Hannibal is being kept inside a cage, and is brought his dinner by a couple of dim-witted guards. During this scene, Hannibal manages to escape by way of an ingenious little plan - during one part, he even bites into one the guard's faces (hey, a cannibal has to eat when he can). A few seconds before this happens, though, we're able to glimpse something during an incredibly brief shot of a magazine on Lecter's table - a copy of "Bon Appétit." French, of course, for "Enjoy your meal." How clever!
