10 Subtle Movie Jokes That Probably Went Straight Over Your Head

3. Hotel California - The Big Lebowski

Gramercy

One of the most memorable pieces of dialogue in the Coen Brothers' awesome The Big Lebowski can be heard when "The Dude" (played by Jeff Bridges, who for unknown reasons has emerged as a running theme on this list) gets into an argument with a cab driver and declares: "I had a rough night, and I hate the f*cking Eagles!"

The Eagles, of course, are a rock band renowned by critics for their radio-friendly sound and fake, pretentious lyrics. Although this is just a Dudeism of sorts, it later comes back in the form of a subtle little joke that's easy to miss - that's to say, when we're introduced to the Dude's arch-nemesis, The Jesus, we're treated to a sequence where we watch him bowl to - yes - a cover version of the Eagles' "Hotel California," courtesy of The Gipsy Kings.

It's not something you notice at first, but you later realise it's the perfect musical cue to accompany the introduction of a man the Dude seriously hates.
