10 Superhero Movies That Broke All The Rules
3. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
One of the most ridiculously inventive movies of recent years, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse doesn’t so much break the rules as take the superhero rulebook and chuck it into a shredder before attempting to stick it back together. The result is a truly delightful film which pays homage to almost 60 years of comic book history while forging a path entirely its own.
Spider-Man is a great hero, and his origin story is one of the most famous in fiction. Wisely, the team behind the Spider-Verse decided not to rehash this once again. Instead they took Marvel’s immense backlog of alternate Spider-stories, from the original Peter Parker to modern web slinger Miles Morales to the porcine Spider-Ham, and created a boldly trippy and adventurous animated feature with heart, laughs, and thrills in equal measure.
By unabashedly championing Spidey's history and finding its own unique aesthetic, Spider-Verse was an immense crowd pleaser. It took a completely different and refreshing approach to the beloved source material, and did so with such warmth and affection that it was impossible not to be charmed.
