Just twenty years ago, films based on caped crusaders and wall crawlers were viewed as nothing more than a license to promote toys. Now, thanks to highly advanced special effects and an emphasis on more realistic, character-driven storytelling, superheroes are being taken seriously. For better or worse, more and more of these films go into production each year, and studios have set their sights on intricate, world-building stories that allow their characters to exist in shared universes spread across multiple franchises. It has, however, been a long, winding road to get to this point, and for every Dark Knight, there was a Daredevil that came before. Luckily, there have been several projects that fell into production woes and never made it off the ground, that would have completely changed the superhero movie landscape.
