1. Whatever Happened To The Man Of Tomorrow?
Billed as the last Superman story before the Crisis of Infinite Earths event which launched a cross-wide reboot for DC (why does that sound familiar?), Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? was written by Alan Moore and explored the last days of Superman, utilizing many of the villains from his rogues gallery. One by one many of them act out in deadlier ways than before, killing civilians and putting the lives of Superman's loved ones at risk as he tries to figure out who is manipulating them all. A lot of Superman fans compare Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? to The Dark Knight Returns in that both stories revitalized a decades old character by doing something new to them. This story is constantly being named one of the best Superman stories written not only because of its place in the mythology, but because of the way it depicts Superman's inspiration in others and also examines the doubts he has during the story. There are also a number of significant deaths involving long-standing characters, creating an emotional investment into them as anyone can be killed. Alan Moore crafted a Superman story that honoured the long history of the character, giving a complete ending to the Silver Age interpretation of Superman. If any Superman story is deserving of an animated treatment, it is surely this one.
