10 Supposedly Badass Film Moments (That Were Totally Underwhelming)

9. Destroying Ares - Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman was as dam-near-perfect as a first-time solo outing for a superhero film as you could possibly get. Until the last 20 minutes...

After finally tracking down the God of War, Diana battles with Ares in the film's finale over the fate of men. Diana spent the whole film insisting that Ares was the hidden factor influencing the hearts and minds of men into fighting each other during The Great War. Despite initially being ridiculed by her companions, Diana is proven to be right, and Ares reveal is a big moment that also discloses the truth about Diana's true heritage as a God in her own right.

This should have been the crowning moment for the film as Diana battled Ares and found the full extent of her power. But instead of going at it with the God of War all hammer-and-tongs (or sword-and-shield in this case) Ares displays more powers in keeping with Jean Gray, telekinetically throwing objects at Diana before donning some rather unimpressive CGI armour and getting into some sparkly fisticuffs.

The main cause behind the decision to make Ares more like a video game boss fight might have come from casting actor David Thewlis in the role. Being a slightly older gentleman and less able to handle complicated action sequences would have restricted how much the actor was able to do on screen, so replacing him with CGI may have seemed entirely reasonable, but the results are rather jarring and don't make a satisfying conclusion to the film.

Sam Ring hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
