10 Supposedly Smart Movie Characters Who Totally Dropped The Ball

1. Doc Brown Drags Marty Into A Complicated Future Plot For Absolutely No Reason - Back to the Future: Part II

Back to the Future By definition, Doc Emmet L. Brown is - technically - the greatest genius to have ever lived. In the fictional universe that Back to the Future is set in, anyway, that must be true - he invented a freakin' time machine for God's sake, which kind of puts him above all the other scientists to have ever existed. And although Doc is certainly quirky, we trust his judgement, given his credentials and the fact that he has Einstein hair. In actuality, though, it turns out that the man who invented time travel doesn't know a thing about how it works. Think on this. At the end of he first Back to the Future movie, everything was totally fine. Marty had upgraded his family (and his mode of transportation). Biff was working as a slave for the McFly clan. Claudia Wells was getting ready to transform into Elizabeth Shue. All was right in the world. And then Doc shows up, saying that Marty has to go to the future to change things so his kid doesn't end up in jail. Sounds like a plan, until you realise that it makes no sense at all to go forward and change the future when you're going to come back to the past. All Doc had to do was warn Marty of what was going to happen in the future, and Marty could have ensured to change the direction of his life at the appropriate time. But why go to the future to stop something if the idea is to come back to the present. Just knowing that your kid is going to end up in a scrape would have been enough to prevent it, which happened anyway as soon as Doc told Marty about it. As it stands, this unnecessary instance of time travel - to prevent something that will ultimately have no effect - launches the plots of two entire movies. Like this article?
