10 Supposedly Smart Movie Characters Who Totally Dropped The Ball

3. Doctor Octavius Conducts An Incredibly Dangerous Nuclear Experiment In A Manhattan Loft - Spider-Man 2

Spider-Man 2 If you've seen Spider-Man 2, you're probably thinking of Doctor Octavius under the guise of his supervillain alter ego "Doctor Octopus," crawling up skyscrapers and throwing Aunt May about like a rag doll, but here we're talking about the guy when he was all brainy and good, and not the maniac throwing taxi cabs through restaurant windows to get Peter Parker's attention. So think back to the beginning of the movie, where we're introduced to Doctor Octavius at what we presume is one of his many science functions. Peter Peter goes along, of course. The experiment we witness at this function is nuclear-based, by the way - there's your first warning sign that this man isn't somebody who really respects science. Octavius' plan is to create a renewable energy source from a radioactive isotope called Tritium, which expresses itself as a large glowing ball that looks like the sun, of which he maintains control over using those iconic metal tentacles. But think about what is happening here: the Doc is conducting an experiment in a Manhattan apartment that could devastate New York in seconds - a nuke blast has a radius of 6 miles! This is supervillain-level stuff, and at this point in the movie Octavius is good!
