6. Gone With The Wind
Adjusted for inflation, Gone With The Wind is the single most financially successful film of all time. Yes, more successful than Avatar. It stands as the impetus of Big Hollywood Epics. The first feature length film to be completely shot in color, and with a running time of almost four hours, GWTW was the grandest spectacle of its time. Its reputation holds up even to this day. Why We Need It: There's a market out there for compelling story telling, and author Margaret Mitchell's story of a southern belle forced into a harsh reality after the fall of the South is a role still rife with feminist bravura--a thing Hollywood needs. But With Who?: Matthew McConaughey as the skeezy, gambling, "yankee" millionaire makes so much sense given his acting chops have improved exponentially. And why not Jennifer Lawrence as the inimitable Scarlett O'Hara? She's got the talent and screen presence to evoke the strength of the conniving, self-empowered belle. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Steve McQueen's got this one in the directorial bag. His knack for intimacy as the most rousing, explosive source of significant entertainment is exactly the rehashing GWTW would need. The Spin: The African-American characters need to be revamped. I say, stray from the source material and empower the black characters as impetus for change, revelation, and as rich mechanisms to further the plot. McQueen would take that to church.
