10 Sure Signs You Are An Utter Film Nerd

6. Full Screen Is Not An Option

2771116 Lord Of The Rings Part 1 Fellowship Of The Ring 01 Speaking of aspect ratio, there is one I didn't tell you about: 1:33. Ugh. Even seeing those numbers together like that makes me shudder. My buddy once owed me 133 dollars and I tore up the check and demanded 132. It was the last in his check book, so I didn't get paid anything, but it was worth it. 1:33, which is thankfully becoming a thing of the past thanks to HD, is basically "full screen" on a TV from '90s. Remember that "This Film Has Been Formatted For Your TV" prompt you got at the beginning before a movie started on a VHS? Well, with DVDs, they let you choose between widescreen and full screen. But sometimes, people didn't know (or care) about the difference. The problem is that with the sides cut off, it's like paying full price for half the movie. Then there's "pan and scan," which moves the picture left and right to see the things you're missing due to the lack of a wider screen. This way, you're able to experience the movie as if you were an oscillating fan.
