10 Surprisingly Good Movie Sequels NOBODY Saw Coming

1. Beavis & Butt-Head Do the Universe

Top Gun Maverick
Paramount

1996's Beavis and Butt-Head Do America was nothing if not a fittingly juvenile - and hilarious - big-screen adaptation of the hit animated series, but when Paramount announced a new direct-to-streaming sequel due for release in 2022, feelings were certainly mixed.

For starters, Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe was eschewing a cinema release in favour of a streaming bow, effectively serving as the lead-in to Paramount's new Beavis and Butt-Head revival series which launched later that summer.

Furthermore, many asked whether Beavis and Butt-Head could even work in the very different world of the 2020s, and finally, audiences were already starting to feel a bit tired of multiverses by 2022.

Despite the obvious potential for this movie to feel like a mere obnoxious relic in the modern era, creator Mike Judge managed to remain true to who these characters are by making light of how out-of-time they quite literally are today. And yet, it somehow doesn't feel like a one-note joke.

It's a testament to Judge's witty writing that Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe isn't a vapid, forgettable slice of streaming ephemera - it's a creative and genuinely laugh-out-loud funny reunion with two animated icons.
