1. Elysium - Gladiator
The Movie: In Ridley Scott's quintessential swords and sandals epic, Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russell Crowe) goes from general to slave to gladiator in a bid to avenge the murder of his wife and son by despotic Roman Emperor Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix).
Tear Jerker Moment: Having a lead character who won't compromise his or her ideals is a sure fire way to make an audience admire a character. Having a lead character who won't compromise, can kick serious butt and gets totally screwed over is a sure fire way to make knuckle draggers incandescent with rage and crying at the injustice of Maximus finally get his revenge, but succumbing to his wounds and dying in the arena. What we do in life echoes in eternity and when Maximus enters Elysium to be with his wife and child and the tears flow hard, men just tend to thank the gods what happens in a darkened cinema stays in a darkened cinema.
