10 Teased Movie Endings That Frustratingly Never Happened

5. The Rapture Actually Happens - Red State

Kevin Smith's satirical horror film Red State follows a group of sex-starved teens who end up targeted by a group of fundamentalist conservative Christians, led by the murderous Pastor Abin Cooper (a brilliant Michael Parks).

This eventually culminates in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives descending upon the church's stronghold, led by Special Agent Keenan (John Goodman), as they prepare to stage a raid of the grounds.

However, the ensuing shootout is interrupted by a cacophonous trumpet blast, which Cooper's followers believe to be a sign that the Rapture is indeed happening.

But as Keenan explains in the film's subsequent debrief, the sound was in fact created by a gang of locals fed up of Cooper's actions, and the film ends with the surviving members of the congregation in jail. The End.

After teasing viewers with the potential insanity of the church actually being correct, it's a shame Smith pulled back and opted for the more "realistic" ending - though this was a result of budgetary constraints.

Smith originally intended to have the Rapture happen for real, with the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse descending upon the compound and causing havoc. Doesn't that sound exactly like the sort of bats**t insanity Smith could've pulled off in a uniquely bonkers way?

The seeds of the idea were clearly there, but it sadly wasn't to be.
