10 Terrible Blockbusters That Wasted An Awesome Cast
9. Clash Of The Titans (2010)
Now infamous for its legendarily awful post-converted 3D, Louis Leterrier's $125m remake rode the post-Avatar 3D boom to almost $500m at the box office, despite not being a very good movie. Aside from the murky and headache-inducing visuals, the project suffered from a script that could have been written on the back of a napkin and an unforgivably dull narrative given the abundance of CGI creatures and action sequences featured. However, Clash of the Titans does feature a talented ensemble cast, most of whom probably signed on for the paycheck and little else. After Terminator Salvation and Avatar, Sam Worthington took his third blockbuster leading role in less than a year and delivered another charisma-free and wooden performance that made many question his status as action cinema's next big thing. However, the supporting cast did boast a number of great actors, several of whom chewed the scenery with great relish. Alongside Gemma Arterton's exposition-spouting love interest, Mads Mikkelsen, Nicholas Hoult, Jason Flemyng and Pete Postlethwaite take supporting roles, along with blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearances from Danny Huston and Luke Evans as Poseidon and Apollo respectively. T he real highlights of the movie come from Liam Neeson's Zeus and Ralph Fiennes' Hades, which sees the Schindler's List co-stars facing off in a game of one-upmanship to see who can deliver the most-over-the-top performance. Hearing Neeson utter the immortal line of 'release the Kraken' was almost worth the price of admission alone. Almost.
I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
