5. Judge Dredd
Why It Was Terrible: This flick primarily sucked for two big reasons. 1) The people in it speak, and 2) the producers didn't have the stones to put Stallone in his place. It happened within the first fifteen minutes of the movie. We are given a nice little introduction to the concept of Mega City, the judges who keep the peace, and battles fought between giant apartment complexes called block wars. By this point all is okay, perhaps not great, but entertaining enough that we are enjoying ourselves. Then Dredd meets with Max Von Sydow's character the Chief Justice. The camera does a 180 degrees around Dredd as he reaches up and removes the helmet to reveal Stallone underneath for the rest of the movie until the very end. At this point any interest fans of the original comic book had in this movie has been nuked and with lines like Stallone twisting his mouth to yell, "I am the law!" we quickly follow after them.
Why You Should Revisit: Because it's Judge Dredd people. Even when it sucks we're still talking about awesome cyperpunk shoot'em'up fare. All this movie needed to be great was an award winning screenwriter to ghost write all the dialogue and a producer with enough clout to tell Stallone that if he didn't keep the helmet on they would get Dolph to do it instead. For those of you who have never read Judge Dredd and don't know how important that is when producers approached Karl Urban for Dredd 3D they began the meeting by stating, "Just so we're clear the helmet stays on." Urban replied, "I wouldn't be here if I thought it was coming off." Dredd 3D was a box office disaster, but a great movie. If you haven't seen it stop making excuses for why it's not worth your time to see a flop. The movie is certified fresh on RottenTomatoes and freaking great.
