10 Terrible Films That Are Actually Awesome
1. The Expendables 3
Described by USA Today as “boneheaded and disposable”, this second sequel was the worst received entry in the franchise, with several critics claiming the series had worn out its welcome. All of which depends upon what you’re looking for in an instalment that adds Ronda Rousey, Mel Gibson, Antonio Banderas, Wesley Snipes and Harrison Ford to the mix.
If you come to the film with expectations of a good story well told, you’ll be disappointed, but if you want to see Rousey kick !*$% and take names while Mad Mel hams it up as the villain, you’re in the right place. Once again, the “plot” is basically a reheated storyline from the 1980s, pumped up with star charisma and lots of explosions. Lots and lots and lots of explosions.
Best of all is the climax set in a building rigged to explode, with Sylvester Stallone and Mad Mel engaging in hand to hand combat while the timer ticks down. When Mel reminds him that he has to be taken to the Hague to stand trial, Stallone shoots him and says, “I am the Hague”, which is exactly what you want from this sort of thing.
