10 Terrible Mars Movies That Don't Bode Well For The Martian

4. Mission To Mars

The Martian John Carter
Disney

Rotten Tomatoes score: 25%

Box Office: $110.9 million ($100 million budget)

Another failed Mars movie to share a worrying element of its structure with The Martian (including, in this case, a visually creative 1980s auteur who hadn't made anything good in a while), Mission To Mars features another Martian sandstorm and a rescue mission to save a sole stranded survivor on the Red Planet's surface.

Ultimately, though, Brian De Palma's misjudged Mission resolves itself as a lacklustre take on the same Chariots Of The Gods nonsense that informed Scott's Prometheus.

Another deeply derivative, surprisingly high budget failure, Mission To Mars is half improbable astronaut adventure, half sub-2001 mystical interplanetary mumbo-jumbo. Still, it's not even the worst Mars movie of 2000...
