7. Cloverfield - Hud Gets Eaten
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocb7pXndlug Cloverfield is one of the most entertaining entries into two genres - the monster movie, and the found footage movie - given its original creature design, superbly-developed mystery, and its (mostly) realistic engagement with the idea of people lugging a camera around New York City. It all gets a bit murky, though, once Hud, the film's comic relief character, is set upon by the creature, causing him to panic before he is promptly noshed by the revolting creature - as we get our first glimpse at it - while he is holding the camera, meaning that we get a view inside of the creature, as well as of Hud being spat back to the ground after he's been slobbered on, promptly dying from the impact. Though the scene is stirring in the sense that the laughs are now quite literally over, it feels overly gimmicky even for a film that's found footage, and given how much integrity the rest of the film has, this scene feels utterly incongruous and a stunt just to show off some swanky effects but little more.
