10 Terrible Movie Sequels That Prove Bigger Definitely Doesn't Mean Better
6. Spider-Man 3
Still the textbook example of why studio interference is never a good idea, Spider-Man 3 may have been a major success that ranked as the web-slinger's biggest earner until the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Far From Home crossed the billion dollar threshold last year, but the movie is the most widely-used comparison when it comes to movies overstuffed with superfluous characters and subplots.
Sam Raimi never wanted Venom to be part of the movie, and it shows given how little interest or attention the story pays to Topher Grace's wet blanket Eddie Brock. Another weaponized Goblin was also a stretch too far, which severely impacted what could have been a complex and emotional redemption arc for the Sandman, and who can forget the emo Peter Parker that lives on to this day as a meme?
The eye-watering $258m budget made it the most expensive movie in history, and it still remains the costliest Spider-Man movie ever made, but there's just so much going on at any one time that none of it manages to resonate, bringing what had the potential to be one of cinema's all-time great trilogies to an underwhelming end.
