10 Terrible Movies That Still Smashed The Box Office

Video game movies have come a long way since the days of the so-called curse, in which any game adaptation was all but guaranteed to fail, but even now, for every success, there is a bomb. The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a critical and commercial hit, while Borderlands was panned by critics and flopped at the box office.

Then, there is A Minecraft Movie, which is something of an enigma in the middle. Jared Hess' film grossed just over $950 billion, agonisingly close to joining Mario and Luigi in the billion-dollar club, while also being panned by critics.

There was a lot going against the film. The trailers didn't inspire much hope that it would actually be good, it came off the back of two Razzie nominations in one year for Jack Black (for Dear Santa and the aforementioned Borderlands), and there was the baffling decision to make it, at least in part, live-action.

There's no denying that the likes of Black, Jason Momoa, and Jennifer Coolidge helped in selling tickets, and certainly there were plenty of moments that went viral and took the internet by storm. However, it's important to remember that sending cinemas into wild frenzies with the phrase "chicken jockey" does not make a good film.
