8. Vickers' Death - Prometheus
I am (mostly) a defender of Ridley Scott's Prometheus; sure, the film has its share of flaws, but it's a majestic, thought-provoking sci-fi the likes of which we haven't seen in years. The prevailing problem throughout is that the scientist characters simply aren't very smart; we see them taking their helmets off without hesitation on an uncharted planet, and they don't appear to have a very firm grasp of basic scientific things like, oh, I dunno,
physics. This is the point where the film really loses me; Meredith Vickers (Charlize Theron) is fleeing from the crashing derelict ship, which is rolling towards her like a doughnut, and instead of running left or right out of its path, she simply continues running forward, and is summarily crushed to death by it. What an awfully stupid death for such an interesting, seemingly intelligent character.
