10 Terrible Superhero Movies With One Redeeming Feature
1. Batman & Robin: The Visual Effects
It's all too easy to bash Batman & Robin and blame it for setting the Dark Knight back years in Hollywood. Many have called Joel Schumacher out for the campy, puerile mess of bat nipples and ice puns he created in 1997, but is it really that bad?
If you prefer the goofy hijinx of Adam West to the darkness of Tim Burton and the realism of Christopher Nolan, then the answer is no, but the majority of bat fans would beg to differ. The movie, however, does have attributes nobody can refute.
The array of Razzie award nominations Batman & Robin received may have been justified, but so too were the Saturn Award nominations for Best Make-up and Best Costume (if you can excuse the rubber nipples and butt shots). From its neon lights to its colourful, pantomime-esque wardrobe, the movie is a visual spectacle throughout.
Granted, dark and gritty is a better fit for Batman, but Schumacher and his creative team achieved what they set out to do from a visual standpoint: craft a version of Gotham with a lighter, more colourful aesthetic and reimagine its characters in a family-friendly way. Nobody thanked him for that, but it was creative nonetheless.
