10 Terrifying British Horror Movies You Probably Haven’t Seen
1. A Field In England
The English Civil War is not the subject of many films in the modern day, especially not in the horror genre. However, this 2013 flick said hold my beer and decided to make a creepy, unsettling and downright disturbing scary tale set in the backdrop of the historical period.
A Field in England follows a collection of battlefield deserters who are captured by an alchemist. This strange figure forces them to partake in his attempts to uncover a hidden treasure he believes is buried in an overgrown field.
The film is presented in black and white, causing it to almost feel like a full historical drama. This stylistic choice also makes A Field in England deeply uncanny once the violence and occult surrealism enter the fray, presenting a clash of styles from the awful things seen on screen compared to the beautiful cinematography.
This Ben Wheatley-helmed offering is also incredibly well-acted, boasting great performances from actors such as Reece Shearsmith, Michael Smiley, Peter Ferdinando and Julian Barratt. While it's not the most conventional horror tale, A Field in England is certainly something you won't want to miss if you love British cinema.
