10 Terrifying British Horror Movies You Probably Haven’t Seen
5. Berberian Sound Studio
There are many terrifying jobs in the world. Imagine being a lion-tamer, high-rise window washer or crime scene cleaner; it doesn't bear thinking about. Still, this film takes what should be a simple, non-threatening job and turns it into a nightmare.
Berberian Sound Studio follows a sound engineer named Gilderoy, played by Toby Jones, as he travels to the titular studio in Italy to work on a film that he thinks is about horses. Once there, he is informed that the project is actually an Italian giallo feature, a genre known for its exploitative violence and sexual content. As his contribution to the flick continues, the lines between fiction and reality begin to blur.
The picture is carried by the masterful performance of Jones, who accurately conveys the sense of a man losing his mind. As the plot progresses, you get the sense that life imitates art as events become more violent and unpredictable. While it's not overly gory or shocking, the psychological horror will leave your mind reeling.
Peter Strickland, who also created In Fabric, is the writer/director behind the film, with both of those movies proving that he has a deep connection to British modern horror cinema.
