10 Terrifying Horror Double Bills For Halloween

3. The Wicker Man And Kill List

Theme: Meet the cults. If there's one thing you should know about weird and secretive cults it's that you really don't want to get on the wrong side of them. Fortunately in the real world it's not very often you come across one - and nor would you want to. From the safety of your living room and in the fictional realm of horror movies they're not quite as bad. Unless of course you scare easily... Opening our double bill of cults we begin with one of the true classics of the genre - The Wicker Man. Despite being poorly received on its release it has thankfully gone on to earn itself a reputation as a real gem of British horror, amassing a substantial cult (ahem!) fan base in the decades since its release. A police inspector (Edward Woodward delivering his best performance) arrives at a remote Scottish island to investigate the disappearance of a teenage girl and soon discovers the residents are more than just a little unhelpful. Sticking to Britain for our second feature, for the first hour or more you'd be forgiven for wondering why this is playing alongside The Wicker Man - after all, for the most part Kill List plays out more like a crime thriller, albeit one interspersed with some family melodrama. But as our two protagonist hit men delve deeper into their sordid work, the film suddenly shifts gears - or rather, leaps tracks - and enters full-on horror territory. One of the best British films of the last decade, Kill List is a truly genre-bending foray into a nightmarish underworld governed by the occult.
