10 Terrifying Horror Movie Monsters With Very Little Screen Time
9. The Entity - The Entity
The Entity centres around a mother, Carla Moran (Barbara Hershey), who finds herself being physically and sexually assaulted by an invisible force. Even though you half-expect the the entity to take on a physical form at some point (much like in Tobe Hooper's Poltergeist), it remains invisible from start-to-finish.
This was a bold but wise decision, since the entity's power is left to the viewers' imagination, which makes the insidious incubus much more frightening. Because Carla can't see her tormentor, she's completely at its mercy, making her feel utterly helpless. Watching "nothing" thrash Carla's house and hurl her across the room with such animalistic ferocity will give anyone goosebumps.
What makes these supernatural encounters more petrifying is the fact they're accompanied with Charles Bernstein's soundtrack, Relentless Attack. Every time you hear this blaring ballad, you know Carla is in for a world of hurt.
However, it's Barbara Hershey's performance as Carla that keeps us enthralled. The way she contorts her body as she's being tossed to the ground or smashed into walls, it's hard to believe she's acting.
Thanks to an amazing music, performances, and filmmaking, the entity scared the hell out of viewers, despite never appearing.
