10 Terrifying Horror Movie Villains Ruined By Terrible Backstories

1. Michael Myers - Every Movie After The First

Halloween's Michael Myers is somewhat unique in the horror world for boasting not one, but two of the worst backstories ever written.

First came the convoluted, and eventually retconned, storylines introduced during the fourth, fifth and sixth films. According to these films, Michael Myers is a cursed puppet of the secretive and mystical group known as the Thorn. This group are responsible for inflicting the 'Curse of Thorn' on Myers, causing him to become a mindless drone hellbent on killing his next of kin every year. There's also a strange psychic link between Myers and his family which doesn't help make things any easier to follow.

It's all overly complicated and only exists to justify the plethora of low-budget Halloween movies being churned out year on year.

Rob Zombie's two Halloween films would completely introduce a new version of Michael Myers' backstory, however this one was not much better. Showing off Myers' destructive home life, Zombie's first Halloween film spends almost half of its runtime following this whiney kid around, shoehorning in as many psychotic traits as it can before its time is done.

In this version of events Myers' first kill isn't even his sister anymore, being placed behind some random school bully.

Something about seeing this hulking lifeless mass-murderer being shown as a stroppy pre-teen really does lower the fear factor this classic villain usually carries.
