10 Terrifying Horror Movies Set In A Prison
9. The Platform (2019)
Next we have a more modern and unique entry. The Platform was released on Netflix a couple of years back and features a very different kind of prison. It operates on an entirely vertical layout with prisoners on each floor fighting over scraps of food.
It was made in Spain and follows Goreng (played by Iván Massagué) who finds himself locked inside a "vertical self-management centre". His cell is a wide square with a hole in the centre reaching down for miles. At level 48, much of the meals lowered down are shockingly poor and any effort to escape results in either a long fall or getting crushed by the returning elevator.
The film is very metaphorical in its message, examining how humans have a nasty tendency to take and take for themselves without leaving anything for others. As the nastier aspects of this unethical social experiment emerge, Goreng finds himself feeling more responsible for others.
It's certainly far stranger than other entries on the list, but The Platform has resonated with modern viewers a fair bit. This is mostly down to its examination of class structure and placing its characters in desperate, stomach churning situations. Cannibalism, excrement and bloodshed all play grisly roles in the proceedings.
