10 Terrifying Low Budget Horror Movies
3. Night Of The Living Dead
To talk about Night of the Living Dead in a horror article
would be like talking about feathers at an Early Writing Implements convention:
it has to be done, but what can be said that hasn’t been done before?
Nothing, really. There are articles, dissertations, and even whole books that have been written on the importance of Night of the Living Dead, the little film that could, the picture that may not have invented the modern zombie as a movie monster, but sure did popularise it. Even today, it’s a grim watch, the grainy black and white framing not just a mark of its age, but a badge of honour that – like wrinkles on your grandma - enhances everything about it.
There has been a lot made about Night of the Living Dead too, and how it is a scathing condemnation of racism. This is something that has been denied by the late, great George A. Romero, but not all themes are intentional – sometimes they float to the top of a piece of art long after its completion – and it’s hard not to see the social commentary that seems to weave amongst the scenes like an errant intestine.
Regardless of its lofty intentions or not, Night of the Living Dead is a deftly made first stab at a genre that not only stands up today, but is still a constant source of inspiration. If you haven’t already, you should check it out.
