10 Terrifying Monsters In Non-Horror Movies

5. The Basilisk - Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets

Fantasy often goes hand in hand with terrifying monsters, as The Lord of the Rings already demonstrated. But, if massive spiders don't do it for you (sorry Shelob and Aragog), then Harry Potter's got you covered with an even bigger nightmare.

The Basilisk appears in The Chamber of Secrets, where it battles the Boy Who Lived. Its appearance almost makes you forget you're watching a fantasy movie about magical children, with Christopher Columbus' second Harry Potter film ramping up the horror exponentially.

Who could blame kids for being terrified of this thing? It is one scary-as-hell giant snake. Its fangs are massive, its body is creepy, and it can petrify people with just a glance.

Potter may have survived his battle with the Basilisk, but just because this slithery guy didn't take out the titular hero doesn't mean it has no blood on its hands - or, technically, scales. This dastardly beast was responsible for the death of Myrtle Warren, later known as Moaning Myrtle, as ordered by Tom Riddle.

The Harry Potter films certainly have some spooky beasts, but nothing does it quite like this terror.
