10 Terrifying Movie Characters You Never Actually Got To See
2. The Babadook - The Babadook
The Babadook came out earlier this year to a flurry of great reviews across the board, calling it one of the most frightening films in recent years and bound to be an instant classic. These reviews were not wrong, and part of this is the fear derived from its mostly invisible eponymous monster, the Babadook. Mother and son, Amelia and Samuel, discover the existence of the Babadook through a mysterious childrens book that appeared on Samuels book shelf. At first, all you see of the Babadook is the creep-induced black and white pencil drawings found within the book, depicting a humanoid figure in a top hat and coat but with huge, black eyes and claws. After reading the book, Samuel starts to see the Babadook everywhere. The audience is to assume its a delusion, until Amelia starts to realise that hes everywhere for her too. There are mysterious noises in the house, and when Amelia goes to the police she sees his hat and coat hanging in the police offices. For the large proportion of the film, the Babadook is just a shadow that appears in the corners of your vision, until he possesses Amelia. He is seen briefly before he jumps inside of her and then briefly again after she fights him off, after which he becomes invisible. The Babadook maintains his horror by tapping into that crazy child-like voice in the back of your mind that tells you that theres something under the bed, even when youve already checked and seen with your eyes that theres not. The Babadook exists outside of a physical monster, because, as the film states, if its in a word, or in a look, you cant get rid of the Babadook.
