10 Terrifying Movie Characters You Never Actually Got To See

7. Panzuzu - The Exorcist

Whilst most people are fairly familiar with the image of Regan possessed by Panzuzu, along with her peeling, discoloured skin and absolutely terrifying dental work, it€™s easy to forget that Panzuzu himself doesn€™t make much of an appearance. For those unfamiliar with The Exorcist, (really? You don€™t know the story?) the film follows 12-year-old Regan, who begins acting strangely after playing with a ouija board. When she kills her babysitter, the doctors decide an exorcism is the best way to go (obviously) and then there€™s all the drama that you€™ve probably heard about with green vomit and, erm, crucifix masturbation. Although the film shows a whole lot of Regan€™s possession by Panzuzu, you see very little of the demon himself, although arguably it's his visible presence that made the film so very frightening. All you really see of Panzuzu is flashes of a menacing white face with red-rimmed eyes and grotesque teeth that appear randomly throughout the film. These flashes come through so quickly and subtly that the audience may not even notice them upon first viewing, leaving a terrifying mental trail that you aren€™t necessarily consciously aware of. Panzuzu then remains a shadowy figure that lingers just in the corners of both vision and psyche. At some points you don€™t even consciously know that he has been present, the hideousness of his presence has been registered by you subconsciously. As such he is completely inaccessible and you are unable to face him as a character. Due to this he cannot be defeated, making him even scarier as he can get to us without us even knowing.
