10 Terrifying Taiwanese Horror Movies You NEED To See
4. Detention (2019)
Some mediums go incredibly well together, but video games and movies are not one of them. Video game movie adaptations have been the bad egg of cinema for decades now. Still, sometimes gold slips through the cracks, and this horror flick is one of those escapees.
Based on the video game of the same name, this movie takes place in the 1962 White Terror (a period of martial law in Taiwan) and shows two students stuck inside their school. While there, they are haunted by the sins of their pasts in this oppressive world where free speech, education and happiness are hard to come by. Oh, and there are ghosts, of course.
It's a solid reinterpretation of the game, as it takes all the atmosphere of the title and successfully moulds it into the feature-length runtime, adding enough to make it feel fresh while staying faithful to the source material.
However, even without pre-existing knowledge of the video game or the historical context, the movie still holds up incredibly well. It's well shot, with plenty of darkness hiding the shoddier VFX and painting a tense atmosphere. Plus, the narrative is a twisting well of intrigue, drama and emotion.
