Deathwatch follows familiar enough plot with a group of lost British soldiers in World War I taking shelter in an abandoned enemy trench only to discover spiritual forces at work.

The trenches provide a suitably creepy backdrop to proceedings, with our disparate protagonists forced to not only do battle with unseen evils, but also the squalor of life in the trenches alongside the mud, the rodents and the rotting bodies.

Billy Elliott star Jamie Bell takes the lead as an innocent and impressionable young soldier who ends up emerging as the protagonist-of-sorts, while there are solid supporting turns from familiar faces like Kris Marshall and Matthew Rhys.

However, it’s Andy Serkis who ends up stealing the show as Private Quinn, a brutal and remorseless soldier who thrives on the violence of war.

It’s a terrifying performance, adding an extra dimension of terror to proceedings alongside the dark forces at play elsewhere in the film.

An atmospheric tale, the premise for Deathwatch would not have looked out of place on a series like the Twilight Zone and certainly delivers on its early promise, blending paranoia and genuine scares to fine effect on screen.
