10 Things You Didn't Know About Robin Williams

2. ...But He Was Also A Huge Nerd

Not that he was a totally sport-obsessed jock or anything. Far from it. Along with his staggeringly nerdy love for all things Star Trek and Doctor Who, Williams was also an avid gamer. He was as big a fan of video games as pen-and-paper tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons, although his heart always remained with Nintendo. He named his daughter, from his second marriage, after the eponymous Princess from The Legend Of Zelda series - of which he was a huge admirer - and may also have named his son for Cody from the beat 'em up game Final Fight. A couple of years back Robin and Zelda Rae Williams appeared in an advert for the Nintendo 3DS re-release of Ocarina Of Time. It was pretty cute. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fBKjjgkMHM Not only that but he had a whole routine in his stand-up arsenal about being insulted by 10-year-olds whilst playing Call Of Duty online (something we can all relate to) and seemed to spend a significant amount of downtime in the presence of video games: he had a World Of Warcraft account, spoke highly of Portal during a Reddit Q&A and loved Valve's Half-Life, too, having had an exclusive half-hour preview play of the sequel before its release and saying "It€™s like you've been seeing two-dimensional and now you can see 3-D. It€™s incredible." Williams also put his money where his mouth was by making public appearances related to video games, performing live at the 2006 Consumer Electronics Show during Google's keynote speech and turning up at the E3 expo that same year, helping to demonstrate Sims creator Will Wright's new (and ultimately doomed) game Spore, comparing the title favourably to the likes of Black & White and Populous, both of which he was a fan of. The man played more games than us, if that's possible. It's also impossibly cool.
