10 Things Hollywood Must Get Right With The Dark Tower Movie
9. Definitely Cast Matthew McConaughey As The Man In Black/Randall Flagg
Adapted to the big screen, The Dark Tower will live or die on the strength of its villain. The Man in Black, the elusive, all-powerful villain of Stephen King's epic series is one of the greatest ever, and you need an actor who can juggle his malice and evil and charisma in a way that feels natural and unnatural in equal measure. The Man in Black later turns out to be Randall Flagg, of course, who is a semi-immortal villain who reappears across the length of Stephen King's work (most notably, he's the bad guy in masterpiece The Stand). In short, then, The Dark Tower requires an actor who can convince, entertain and frighten - not to mention somebody who will draw large audiences into theatres. Is it any wonder that Matthew McConaughey was recently offered the role of Randall Flagg for the upcoming adaptation, then? Though there are rumours (and some confusion) regarding the actor being offered the roles of both Flagg and Roland Deschain, it seems more likely that he's in talks for the villain - the actor has been linked to the role since last year, after all, when he was being talked up to play Flagg in an adaptation of The Stand. Five years ago, such a thing would have sounded like a joke, but nowadays McConaughey is one of Hollywood's most sought after actors. Not only that, but you can seriously imagine him terrorising the screen as Flagg - based on recent performances, he ticks all the boxes. Having approached McConaughey for the part of Flagg, the studio should really do their best to convince him to sign on. Yes, it's kind of a major commitment, but there's no denying that he was born to play this role. Sign him up, and let's get this show on the road.
