10 Things Hotly Anticipated Films Need To Get Right In 2016

8. Star Wars: Rogue One Needs To Stand On Its Own Two Feet

Not much is known about Star Wars: Rogue One (or rather, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) aside from the fact that it's set shortly before the events of A New Hope, and details a group of Rebel spies who attempt to steal the plans for the Death Star. That may not be a lot to go on, but it does give us the basic beginning, middle and end of the entire film. The main problem with Rogue One is a fairly glaring one €“ namely, we know the outcome of the plot. Going into the film, we already know that the Rebels succeed in their mission, and that they manage to steal the plans. So the film needs to create tension and suspense in other ways. How can they do this? Primarily through characters. Though we know the mission is a success, what we don't know is who lost their lives in order to secure its victory. If it's anything like grabbing the plans for the second Death Star (which will likely be depicted several years from now in the spin-off Star Wars: Many Bothans Died To Bring Us This Information) then the mission will be plenty messy. Making the audience care about a bunch of characters and then putting their lives in jeopardy seems the most effective way to retain some serious suspense. On top of that, the film needs have a strong sub-plot or two. Give viewers who are uninterested in the stuff about the Death Star (owing to its obvious conclusion) something new to get interested in. Oh, and arguably most importantly, don't in any way alter or manipulate the events of A New Hope by trying to present them in a fresh, new or twist-based context. Leave the original trilogy well enough alone.
