For those who are baffled right now...
Non-diegetic sound is represented as coming from the a source outside story space. It is 'sound' whose source is neither visible on the screen nor has been implied to be present in the action: narrator's commentary sound effects which is added for the dramatic effect mood music [

I have a playlist for any mood I'm in so I can lose myself in the music. You could say the various playlists could be seen as soundtracks to my soul... However... In the movies, we are accustomed to narration, sound affects and mood music. BUT can you imagine if that was the case in your day to day life?? Maybe having an uplifting soundtrack may be cool, like having my iPod on loudspeaker wherever I go. Although I would feel schizophrenic if I started to hear my thoughts (or someone else's) aloud! And who would want dramatic music to feel uneasy when looking in the mirror? Who would want Hitchcock's
Psycho (1960) score playing when in the shower? Or Spielberg's
Jaws (1975) score playing whilst swimming?? Or Kubrick's
The Shining (1980) score creeping up whenever you experience writer's block or enter a lift??? Silence will be a thing of the past and the world will be doomed by a plague of paranoia!!!
